Thatched cottages in Bedfordshire, EnglandBedfordshire is a county in the south east of England bordered by Cambridgeshire to the North East, Buckinghamshire to the West, Hertfordshire to the South East and Northamptonshire to the North.

The most striking geological feature of the county is the chalk ridge known as the Chiltern Hills or the "Chilterns", which, in 1965 were designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The hills have long been quarried for chalk and the wooded slopes provided the raw material for the makers of furniture, especially chairs for which the region gained a reputation of exccellence. Today the Chilterns are incredible popular with tourists who arrive to enjoy a variety of pastimes, not least walking.

Although the county is mainly agricultural you will find a reasonable selection of visitor attractions worth a visit. ZSL Whipsnade Zoo (in Dunstable) should be high on the list for those looking for family friendly attractions and those who enjoy leisurely walks through parks and gardens will appreciate the wonder of the Swiss Garden at Shuttleworth Mansion in Biggleswade.

There are a number of towns in the county which offer a selection of quality visitor attractions and the majority can be found in the county town of Bedfordshire, Bedford. Bedford has a fine collection of art galleries and museums including; the 306th Bombardment Group Museum, Bedford Museum, Bromham Mill and Gallery, Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, the John Bunyan Museum, Moot Hall Museum, The Glenn Miller Museum and The Gallery.

Another family friendly visitor attraction worth a mention is the fascinating Mead Open Farm and Rare Breeds which is found in Billington, about two and a half miles from Leighton Buzzard. The attraction is a working farm with the usual farm animals but they also have rare breeds, a pet's corner, children's play area, an undercover heated playbarn and a tearoom as well as seasonal tractor and trailer and pony rides.
