Birmingham Museum and Art GalleryBirmingham Museum and Art Gallery was designed by H. R. Yeoville Thomason and opened to the public in 1885. Famously the museum is home to a number of items of International importance and it is renowned for having the world's largest collection of works by Edward Burne-Jones as well as an extensive collection of work by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

You will find the main entrance to the museum located in Chamberlain Square below the clock tower, which is known locally as, "Big Brum", a witty wist on the name of the famous Big Ben of London. You will also find entrances via the Gas Hall (Edmund Street) and Great Charles Street.

The museum currently features over forty galleries, as well as two major exhibition spaces, in the Grade II listed building. The original building also formed part of the Council House. In the early twentieth century an extension to the Council House was built part of which is used to house some of the galleries.

Over the years the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery has shifted in size. During the 1950s some space was lost to other uses but was restored in the early 1980s. In 1993 the museum was extended, taking in the Gas Department of the Council House, to form the Gas Hall and now serves as a major exhibition gallery. In 2001 the second major exhibition gallery was built in the part of the building previously used by the Water Department.

If you are planning to visit the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery please be aware that there may be some distruption as there a plans in place to carry out extensive restoration works to the building over the next few years. It is also hoped that a further new development may also be built to allow for even more galleries.
