Brighton Royal Pavilion is a former royal residence and Brighton's most instantly recognisable landmark. In the late eighteenth century is was a strong held belief, by the medical establishment, that many ailments could be cured by a simple visit to the seaside. Many physicians prescribed bathing in, and sometimes the drinking of, seawater and, in 1786, the physician to the Prince of Wales (who later became then Prince Regent of England before becoming King George IV) recommended that he visit Brighton to help with his gout. The Prince stayed at a substantial, but rather ordinary, farmhouse in the Old Steine area of Brighton. This building was, eventually, to become the Indian styled work of art we see today.
Ever since the Prince visited the seaside resort of Brighton the town has been associated with, what the British call, the "dirty weekend". This long and deeply held associated stems from the fact that when the Prince spent time in the town it was with the accompaniment of his mistress, Maria Fitzherbert. The controversy in the relationship was that Fitzherbert was a Roman Catholic and under the civil law of the land about royal marriages the Prince could not marry somebody of that faith. This did not stop the couple marrying and even though Pope Pius VII declared the marriage valid it remained unlawful in England.
When the Prince became the Prince Regent George was more able to indulge himself and in 1815 he commissioned the designer John Nash to redesign the building in Old Steine. Nash was the architect of London's Regent Street but the Royal Pavilion was to be completely different. The design by Nash is what we see today, described as Indo-Saracenic, a style popular in India at that time and much of the rest of that century. George spent a great deal of time here, with his mistress, and after his death, in 1830, King William IV used the Pavilion during visits to Brighton.
In 1837, with the ascendancy of Queen Victoria, the royal seaside residency was shifted to the Isle of Wight and all of the lavish fittings were removed to other palaces. The coming of the railway had vastly reduced the privacy and therefore was not really suitable for Queen Victoria and her family (her last visit was in 1835). In 1850 the town purchased the building and first used it as assembly rooms. Brighton has worked hard to alter the "slap 'n' tickle / what the butler saw" perception of the resort and today the town is more renowned for having a vibrant nightlife amongst many other things which you can read about on our main page about Brighton. From the middle of the twentieth century municipality of Brighton has invested much time, cash and effort in restoring the Royal Pavilion to the magnificence of the time of King George.
Today the Brighton Royal Pavilion is primarily a museum but is also used for such diverse things such as education or as a wedding venue.
