Cheshire is a county in the north west of England sharing its borders with the English counties of Derbyshire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Shropshire, Staffordshire and also the counties of Flintshire and Wrexham in Wales. The county consists of mainly rural land though there are a few large towns which are found along the River Mersey. Around the industrial areas of Widnes and Runcorn it is still possible to see some of the main industries of the area such as the production of bulk chemicals however most tourist are far more interested in this UK vacation destination for the beauty of it's countryside, small rural towns and the historical city of Chester.
Cheshire has a selection of historical sites of importance including prehistoric burial grounds and Bronze & Iron Age hill forts. The most popular visitor attraction in this county is the above mentioned city of Chester and it's superb Roman fortress and walls which draw large numbers of tourists in the summer months. Apart from the Roman elements the county is also incredibly appealing for it's superb fifteenth and seventeenth century timbered buildings such as Little Moreton Hall.
If you have an interest in waterways the you will be pleased to learn that the county of Cheshire has a comprehensive canal system which includes a large number of canals. Canals in Cheshire include; Ashton Canal, Bridgewater Canal, Macclesfield Canal, Peak Forest Canal, Rochdale Canal, Shropshire Union Canal, Trent and Mersey Canal and Wardle Canal. As well as the many canals there are a fair few rivers including the River Bollin, River Dane, River Dee, River Gowy, River Goyt, River Mersey and the River Weaver. There are plenty of things to do along (or on) Cheshire waterways besides walking along the banks but if you are interested in walking vacations the county also satisfies here too with a small number of recreational walks including the Biddulph Valley Way, Gritstone Trail, Sandstone Trail, South Cheshire Way and parts of the Wirral Way.
