England: Herefordshire
|
|
Herefordshire is a county in the West Midlands of England which shares its borders with the counties of Gloucestershire, Shropshire and Worcestershire, and the country if Wales. As a UK vacation destination the county is one of the most rural in England. Sparsely populated, with masses of unspoilt countryside, Herefordshire offers relaxing vacations with a selection of historic buildings, Grade I listed churches and castles to explore.
Exploring the East of the county you will find a number of superb little market towns surrounded by agriculture. The area is famous for its cattle, with the main cattle sales occurring in the county town, and cathedral city, of Hereford.
Walking/rambling vacations are popular, especially in the Black Mountains and the Malvern Hills. Offa's Dyke is an ancient earthwork created in the eighth century by King Offa. Along your way you will be able to visit some fine country pubs such as the l7th Century Coaching Inn which is now the Old Black Lion pub (which has a superb restaurant).
The River Wye is found at the border of the county with Wales (and parts of it serve as the actual border). The river's source is in the Welsh mountains and it is incredibly important with regards to conservation, the river has been classified a Site of Special Scientific Interest and much of the lower Wye Valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Foremost the river is well known for its outstanding beauty but it also serves as an excellent place to enjoy sports such as canoing and other water sports.
