England: Lancashire
|
|
Lancashire, sometimes referred to as the County of Lancaster after the name of the county town and commonly abbreviated to Lancs, is a county in the north west of England. Lancashire shares it's borders with the counties of Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.
During the Industrial Revolution, of the 18 th & 19 th centuries, Lancashire grew, extremely quickly, into one of the major commercial and industrial centres of England. A huge number of mill towns sprung up across the region and a number of collieries opened up. The port of Liverpool expanded to become one of England's most important. With the coming of the railways Blackpool quickly became a popular destination for day trippers from the surrounding manufacturing, miners and mill workers and today the seaside resort (shown left) remains the most popular north west vacation destination.
Today industry still plays an important role in the economy of Lancashire but, like elsewhere in the UK, the service sector is now the most important employer. Even though the region is powerfully associated with industry (and it's history) it may be surprising for you to learn that agriculture still accounts for a considerable amount of Lancashire's income. There are extensive areas around the many mill towns that have spectacular scenery and many parts of the Lancashire countryside have been declared Sites Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and just a brief look at the list of places to visit in Lancashire below will give you a rough idea of exactly how many beautiful places there are to see.
As well as the countless areas of beauty the county also has a wealth of museums, art galleries, heritage railways, historic houses, castles, abbeys and other religious buildings and a host of other fascinating buildings well worth visiting. Whatever type of vacation you enjoy most Lancashire is, almost, the perfect UK vacation destination for your requirements. For a fun filled and lively vacation visit Blackpool, it really is hard to beat!
