Spitalfields Market is a popular London market which has been the source of recent controversy. Confusingly there is the Old Spitalfields Market and the New Spitalfields Market, it is the old market that we shall be looking at here.
Records show that there has been a market on this site since, at least, 1638, but was then known as "Spittle Fields" and was involved in the sale of "flesh, fowl and roots". The recently redeveloped site (the cause of the controversy mentioned above) features part of the original 1887 covered market, which has been fully refurbished. Sadly a new office block stands where the western end of the market once stood but, thankfully, the remaining building is now registered as a Grade II listed building and therefore protected.
Originally Spitalfields Market served to feed the rapidly increasing population of London and it grew to meet demand. In 1991 the wholesale fruit and vegetable part of the market was moved to a new site in Leyton and is now called the New Spitalfields Market.
Today Spitalfields Market is mainly concerned in the sale of fashion items, arts & crafts and gifts. There is a fantastic selection of market stalls, such as "Bagman & Robin" and "Catherine Campion" featuring superb handbags. You will also find a fine selection of places to buy and eat food, with a number of fresh food stalls, restaurants and other food outlets dotted around.
