The Imperial War Museum North (IWM North) is an all weather atrraction situated on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal for which you should allow yourself about an hour to get around. However you may find that you take a little longer if you find somehting of interest!

IWM North offers people of every age thought-provoking exhibitions and also direct access to its emotion stirring collections. The museum's exhibitions and colloections give the visitor some insight into the expansive impact of war and conflicts in the 20th and 21st Century.

This incredibly popular Manchester visitor attraction is housed in the spectacular building shown in the photo to the left. The prize winning building was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and first opened its doors to the public in July 2002.

In its very first year the Imperial War Museum North welcomed nearly half a million visitors. Although it has gained much praise the building has come under fire for its poor energy efficiency as politics lean more and more to green elements in building design.

One of the fantastic things about this wonderful museum is that the walls are used for hourly audiovisual presentations on a huge scale. The mass of images and sounds can have on impact upon the viewer, especially when complemented by personal accounts.

Even if you are not interested in such museums it must be stressed that this is nothing like the old stuffy, dusty, museums of the past. The huge amount of floor space is put to excellent use and many of the exhibitions may surprise you in their educational content.
