The Manchester Jewish Museum is an all weather atrraction situated in former Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue. You should allow yourself about two hours to get around the museum comfortably.

The former worship place tells the history of the Manchester Jewish community conveying the information using pictures, documents, room settings and handsets with testmonies from various people of the past.

The City of Manchester has had a Jewish community for about two hundred years and the grade II listed building (which was completed towards the end of the nineteenth century) was transformed into the museum which opened to the public in March 1984. Designed by the local architect Edward Salomons it was built in the Moorish Revival style.

The museum features a number of collections but many of them require a prior request to view them. The museum is always interested in acquiring suitable items but they request that you make an appointment with the curator rather than just turn up with a donation. Based in the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester many of the items are directly relevant to this area which was once the heart of the Jewish community.

The museum is also an excellent resource for those searching for geneological information. Working closely with the Manchester branch of JGSGB the museum requests that researchers first contact the curator (email address below).

Worth a special mention is the excellent photographic archive. An old photograph speaks more than words and this collection has been growing ever since it was first established in the 1970’s. As well as the photographic archive you will find a fantastic library but again if you are interested you should contact the curator.
