England: Merseyside

|
|
Merseyside is a county in the north west of England. It takes it's name from the River Mersey which was so vital in the development of the city of Liverpool as one of the world's most important sea ports serving the American continent. The county shares it's borders with the counties of Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
The county of Merseyside came into being in 1974 and incorporated places which had previously been in other counties. The seaside resort of Southport had previously been in the county of Lancashire and many folk in the town did not appreciate the change in their postal addresses and some still, to this day, refer to the town being in Lancashire rather than in Merseyside. Other places such as Birkenhead and Wallasey had previously been in the county of Cheshire. This makes for a diverse vacation destination suitable for vastly different breaks ranging from a typical visit to the seaside to city breaks.
Football fans may wish to visit the grounds of Liverpool FC at Anfield or Everton FC at Goodison Park while fans of the music of the Beatles have a huge list of places well worth a visit including The Cavern Club and The Beatles Story Museum.
Until recently it was common to say that something or somewhere was "on" Merseyside but in recent years there has been a move to use the words "in Merseyside" we have chosen to go with the later but we may make an error here and there as both are used throughout the region.
Please note: The list of places to visit in Merseyside below is NOT comprehensive and we apologise if we have not included a place you consider important. We do revisit our pages often and we may add new visitor attractions from time to time, if you would like to see somewhere included in our list please contact us with your suggestion(s) and we shall do our best to oblige.
