England: Tyne and Wear: Newcastle-Gateshead

The Tyne Bridge, Newcastle upon TyneNewcastle-Gateshead is not really a town or city in England, rather, it is a joint project, by the two cities of Newcastle and Gateshead, to promote the area, in North East England, for tourism.

Town, Postcode, Attraction

By pooling their resources and promoting the two areas as one the area has seen a rather incredible increase in popularity with tourists and visitors. In many ways the two are now very much one with it being separated by the River Tyne. Together these two places provide a huge variety of entertainment and other attractions as well as a plethora of places to visit in and around these two cities.

Newcastle upon Tyne is situated on the north bank of the River Tyne and although the town was heavily involved in the wool trade most people know of its strong association with coal mining and the port/shipyards. At one time the shipyards of Newcastle were amongst the most important in the world but today both industries have suffered sharp decline to such a degree that they are near non-existent.

Modern day Newcastle is a vibrant city which is has seen a recent increase in business. Famed for its incredible nightlife the city has much to offer the younger visitor but other attractions make for a diverse appeal. The history of the city goes back to the time of the Roman occupation of Great Britain. The Romans built a bridge here (and a fort to protect it) and after they left it became an important part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. With such a long history you will find a wealth of fascinating historical houses and sites as well as a multitude of museums.

Gateshead is situated on the south bank of the River Tyne and like Newcastle developed at the time of the Romans. Cola mining in Gateshead is first mentioned in 1344 and there was some rivalry with Newcastle (who wanted to annex the town). Today Gateshead is known for its wonderful shopping, the MetroCentre is the largest shopping centre in Europe and the Team Valley Trading Estate is one of the largest (purpose built) commercial estates in Britain.

As well as Newcastle and Gateshead visitors are attracted here for the nearby seaside towns of South Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay and the city of Sunderland. Even if you do not have your own transport it is relatively easy to visit these places as the public transport system in the area is truly superb.
