At one time the region was extremely inaccessible and it was much quicker to travel to the continent than to reach London. This isolation meant that the region traded greatly with the continent and the wealth of the region was considerable. The main income was generated from wool and cloth but at the time of the Industrial Revolution other areas benefitted while Norfolk fell into relative decline.
Due to the Industrial Revolution passing East Anglia over this part of the country has managed to retain many of its fine old buildings including plenty of "wool" churches. These flint churches appear all over the county and are well worth investigating. In recent decades the area has benefitted greatly by the Digital Revolution which has provided much needed jobs in a mainly rural county.
