England: Nottinghamshire
Nottinghamshire is a landlocked county in the East Midlands of England which shares its borders with the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire. As a popular UK vacation destination the county is most well known for its many associations with Robin Hood, the legendary thirteenth century outlaw and while there are certainly many places to visit and visitor attractions in Nottinghamshire which relate to this history it is worth knowing that this region of England is highly suitable for a number of different vacations.
This area of Britain has been important since the Roman occupation and it lies on the Fosse Way (a Roman road linking Exeter to Lincoln taking in many Roman centres along the way). Unfortunately much of this highway now consists of the modern road system. Traditionally the county was associated with the malting and woollen industries but during the Industrial Revolution Nottinghamshire became important for its extensive coalfields which were mined mainly in the north of the county.
The city (and county town) of Nottingham offers a wealth of opportunities for a diverse range of city breaks and vacations. You will find a fine selection of modern visitor attractions as well as a multitude of those relating to the past, including several superb museums. Across the county you will find a wealth of Grade I listed building, historic houses and the likes to visit - take a look at our listings of Nottinghamshire visitor attractions below to discover more.
