England: Merseyside : Southport : Lord Street

Lord Street is Southport's high street and main shopping street. The picturesque street is regarded as one of the finest shopping streets in the north of England, attracting visitors & shoppers from nearby regions such as Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. It is even possible to visit Lord Street on specially arranged shopping trips/tours from a number of operators, such is the appeal of Southport.
Famously the street is known for its wonderful tree lined boulevards, shopping arcades and covered walkways (which you can see in the photograph to the left). Much is made of the fact that, in 1846, Prince Louis Napoleon (who became the French Emperor, Napoleon III, in 1851) lived in lodgings just off Lord Street and it is often said that this street was the main inspiration for his redesign of central Paris which, until then, remained virtually unchanged since medieval times.
One of the best times to appreciate the beauty of Lord Street is very early on a summer's morning. When I say early I mean very early as even then there is a degree of hustle and bustle as vendors prepare for the day. Even though the pavements on Lord Street are incredibly wide it can sometimes be extremely busy and without these wide expanses it would be impossible to move. One way to avoid the jam is to drop into one of the Victorian arcades/covered walkways, of which Wayfarer’s Arcade is the most widely known.

Wayfarer’s Arcade
Owned by Cambridge University, Wayfarer’s Arcade first opened, in 1898, as Leyland Arcade but was renamed as the Burton Arcade when it was sold to Burton’s during the Second World War. It was towards the end of the 1970s that then owners (Broadbent’s department store) renamed it Wayfarer’s Arcade.
The Grade II listed building underwent a £2million refurbishment in 2008 and features a fantastic a
bronze statue of Red Rum, the famous Steeplechasing champion and multiple winner of the Grand National (who was often seen training on Southport Beach).
