England: Suffolk
Suffolk is a small county in the East Anglia region of England, bordered by the counties of Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk. At one time the county was one of the richest parts of England but today it is one of the most peaceful areas in the country often neglected by tourists.
Suffolk is generally flat but the countryside is something really special as it is from here that the famous painters Constable and Gainsborough drew their inspiration. The countryside features a wealth of beautiful woods and rivers with numerous small villages to explore. These villages often have, what are known as, "wool churches". These churches were built during the 16th century when the region gained much wealth from the wool trade. This wealth was invested in fine churches which, today, seem rather too large for the villages in which they are found.
Being flat, Suffolk is a great destination for a cycling vacation. Basing yourself in the main town of Ipswich you can explore the surrounding towns and villages. Venture a little further and you will discover villages such as Monks Eleigh and Bildeston where you will find thatched cottages and other fine old buildings.
