England: West Midlands
West Midlands is a landlocked county in the middle west of England which shares its borders with the counties of Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Although there are areas of countryside the county is mainly urbanised (one of the most urbanised counties in England), the best areas of rural West Midlands is found in the green belt area called the "Meriden Gap". This means that as a UK vacation destination most of the attractions (see our list of things to see and do in the West Midlands below) are related to the past which, in many cases, relate to the industrial past of the area. Birmingham was one of the main "power houses" of the Industrial Revolution and you will find many world class museums relating to this fascinating period.
You will also notice that this region of England has an enormous number of conservation areas. The city of Birmingham has nearly thirty conservation areas (including the wonderful Jewellery Quarter), the city of Coventry has around fifteen conservation areas, Dudley has twenty one, Sandwell has six, Solihull has twenty, Walsall eighteen and Wolverhampton has some thirty conservations areas. That is an astonishing number of superb conservation areas to visit in the West Midlands!
One other reason why the county is a superb vacation destination is that because it is so densely populated the amount of entertainment facilities (such as cinemas, theatres and the likes) is absolutely huge and many feature the latest technologies. The West Midlands provide an enormous number of places to visit which are family friendly but with such places as the excellent Cadbury World, at Bournville, you can sometimes find that you are spoilt for choice.
