England: Wiltshire
Wiltshire is a mainly rural, landlocked, county in the West of England which shares its borders with the city of Bristol and the counties of Berkshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Somerset. As a UK vacation destination the county is most widely known for being the place where you can find Stonehenge (shown to the left). If you are interested in ancient stone circles and you are planning a trip to Wiltshire it is well worth knowning that there are other sites of interest in the county. Unfortunately Stonehenge is not as accessible as it once was and in order to protect it for future generations it is no longer possible to walk amongst the stones and you are only allowed to view them from a short distance away. If you would prefer a more "hands on" experience with the distant past then we strongly suggest that you take a look at the Neolithic stone circle at Avebury, for many people this is the preference for a fuller experience of stone circles!
Of course there is much, much more to the county of Wiltshire than Stonehenge. As you can see from our list of visitor attractions in Wiltshire below (not fully comprehensive) there is a diverse range of things to see and do during your vacation. As well as a fantastic choice of museums & galleries the county has a wealth of listed buildings including many churches and other religious buildings, country houses, castles and the likes. On top of a wide selection of interesting buildings Wiltshire has some amazing countryside and open spaces that can be enjoyed in many different ways (but nothing really beats a leisurely walk in some of Britains most astounding scenery). Those who are planning a canal holiday on the Kennet and Avon Canal should be aware that they could easily find themselves facing a flight of some sixteen locks at Caen Hill (pictured below right). While the canal is fantastic, it links with the River Kennet (at Newbury), the River Avon (at Bath), the Floating Harbour at Bristol) and the River Thames (at Reading) amking an extensive boating trip possible, taking in some of the best stretches of waterway in the United Kingdom.
