England: North Yorkshire : York: Eating & Drinking

Bettys Cafe in YorkYork is a great place to have an evening out with your friends. In the city centre it is noticeable that you only need to walk a few yards to find a great place to go eating or drinking. Whether you find yourself a tearoom, cafe, restaurant, wine bar or pub you can be sure of having a fun filled enjoyable evening. Maybe the abundance of tourists and the masses of students helps to create a wonderful atmosphere but Defoe put the reason down, in more basic terms, to the "abundance of good company".

York Cafés & Tea Rooms

Town, Postcode, Attraction

The choice of quality places to eating and drinking in York is astounding with a decent selection of first class restaurants, historic pubs and incredible cafes & tearooms. I can not really mention tearooms in York without making a special mention of Bettys Café Tea Rooms in St Helen's Square (pictured left) and Little Bettys Café in Stonegate. The Tea Rooms in the Square will be of special interest to those interested in art deco, and the period of the 1930s, but for anyone visiting York it will prove an incredibly enjoyable place to grab a bite to eat. In the basement you will find an amazing little bar. Little Bettys can be found not too far from York Minster in an immaculate listed building featuring some fine antiques, fascinating fixtures and fittings and lots of items related to the tea trade. Bettys has been described as the "ultimate teashop experience".

Another great place to eat in York is the Blake Head Bookshop and their Vegetarian Cafe (which is found at the back of the shop). Other cafés include the cafe at York City Screen (an independant cinema), Café No.8 Gillygate, Café Concerto - Bistro and more.

York Restaurants

If you like to eat in a more relaxed atmosphere while eating first class gourmet food then you will enjoy a visit to The Blue Bicycle at 34 Fossgate (pictured below). The adventerous menus are bound to please but it is worth noting that the restaurant is extremely popular and you would be well advised to book a table in advance (Tel: 01904 673990).

Another great York restaurant is Melton's at 7 Scarcroft Road, again we would recommend that you book your table in advance (Tel: 01904 634341). Reviewed in many guides the restaurant is said to have the "best home cooking", Melton's also has a Cafe Bar Bistro (Melton's Too at 25 Walmgate, telephone 01904 629222).

The Blue Bicycle restaurant in YorkOther restaurants worth looking out for include the 1331 Bar & Restaurant at 13 Grape Lane, 31 Castlegate Restaurant, Ate O Clock at 13a High Ousegate, Delrio's Restaurant at 10 Blossom Court, Frankie & Benny's New York Italian Restaurant & Bar at Clifton Gate, La Tasca at 21 Back (which caters for parties and events for children), The Lime House at 55 Goodramgate, Nando's at 12-12a High Ousegate and St William's Restaurant at 5 College Street.

York Pubs

The Black Swan at Oldstead is the oldest public house in York. The Grade II, 16th Century, listed building just oozes character and certainly provides the best surroundings in which to enjoy a relaxing drink or two. The pub has a selection of locally brewed beers which adds to the whole experience. If you would like to sit outside then there is little to rival the riverside setting of the King's Arms at King's Staithe by the Ouse Bridge. Right in the centre of York you will find many superb pubs and bars including the Golden Ball (Cromwell Road) and many, many more.
