York NightlifeYork is a lively city, especially in the evenings when tourists mix with the student population, folk on stag nights and hen night and locals to make the city one of the most vibrant in the North of England. Whether you would like to go out clubbing, visit a cinema, a theatre, pub, bar or even an Opera House, York has it waiting there for you.

Cinema

Town, Postcode, Attraction

The best cinema in York is the City Screen at 13-17 Coney Street and is an independant "art-house" cinema which features an excellent riverside cafe and bar (Tel: 01904 541155). If you are looking for something a little more conventional or mainstream head for the Odeon on Blossom Street (Tel: 01904 623287) or, if you want to travel a little out of town, the superb Warner Village Complex (Tel: 0870 240 6020) at Clifton Moor shows all of the latest blockbusters.

The Arts

If you like visiting the Opera or theatre York has two fine establishments which are well worth checking out. The Grand Opera House on Cumberland Street (Tel: 01904 671818) not only puts on well known operas but also musicals and other family entertainment. The Theatre Royal in St Leonard's Place (Tel: 01904 623568) also puts on musicals as well as mainstream theatre productions and even pantomime. The Theatre Royal also has a very pleasant cafe-bar.

Live Music In York

You will find that there are several places to hear live music in York and it is possible to see a live act virtually every night of the week. Mainstream acts appear regularly at the Barbican Centre on Barbican Road (Tel: 01904 656688). If you prefer more indie and popular guitar acts then Fibbers (Tel: 01904 651250) may be the best place to visit, virtually every pop act on tour performs here and you can hear live music every night of the week.

If your musical tastes venture more into the jazz, folk and the likes then you may want to visit the Black Swan at Peasholme Green (Tel: 01904632922). As well as serving excellent local real ale (beer) it is the place to see folk singers, singer songwriters and the likes. At least once, or maybe twice, a week the Black Swan features jazz jam sessions, something of a rarity these days.

Also watch out for York's Early Music Festival (Tel: 01904 658338), the UK's largest festival of early music. Held in July the festival features the finest International performers and caters for listeners interested in early music, musicians and even youngsters who want to know more about the topic.

Night Clubs

While York features a high number of bars, pubs and cafes there are not so many night clubs in the city centre. Ziggy's Nightclub (Tel: 01904 620674), found at 53-55 Micklegate, caters for the younger crowd and has a student night on Wednesdays (free entry with a Sturdent Union card). The club opens around 9.30pm and stays open until about 2am. The Gallery Nightclub & VIP Lounge (Tel: 01904 647947) bills itself as York's Number 1 nightclub and few will argue with this bold statement. Found at 12 Clifford Street, it is worth checking the dress code before setting off for the night as some nights are "smart casual" other sportswear is not allowed and on some nights almost anything goes.
