Boscombe is but a suburb of Bournemouth, a seaside resort on the Dorset coast of England. However Boscombe has plenty to offer the tourist and following a recent, enormous, investment, the suburb is now something of an all year 'round resort.
Until recently Boscombe was primarily known for its pier, which was opened in 1889. As part of the recent redevelopment project Bournemouth Borough Council invested in the building of an artificial reef, Europe's first artificial surf reef, designed to enhance the waves for surfing. Made up of fifty five giant sandbags, covering the area of a football pitch, the reef ramps up the existing waves making them ideal for seasoned surfers (those with at least five years experience). Besides the obvious benefits to surfers the reef is already proving to be an incredible environment for sealife. Boscombe already had a reputation as a surfing destination but with the new reef the town caters for surfers of all levels throughout the year. There are various facilities for the surfer including warm showers (located in the Overstrand building).
Of course Boscombe is a superb vacation destination for all types of tourist besides surfers. The beach huts in the mid-20th modernist "Overstrand" building have been fully renovated and are now considered the finest in the United Kingdom. Other facilities at the building (besides the warm showers and beach huts) include changing rooms and toilets. [The Boscombe “Beach Pods” are available for sale on a 25-year lease.]
As mentioned Boscombe has long been known for its pier, dubbed by Wayne Hemingway (of “Red or Dead” fame) as “the coolest pier in the UK.” Now fully renovated the pier has a shop and food outlet at the entrance adn the end of the pier, popular with sea anglers, has some of the finest views of the coast. The approach to the pier features an extensive Edwardian terrace and opposite you will find the Green Flag award-winning Boscombe Chine Gardens.
Literally the biggest attraction in Boscombe is the seven miles of golden beach which has been voted the best in the UK!
