Bournemouth is large resort town on the south coast on England, in fact the town is the largest non-industrial conurbation in Europe, and the largest town/city in the county of Dorset.
Unusual for towns in England Bournemouth only dates from 1810/11 when it was founded by Lewis Tregonwell. The local squire built himself a summer house and planted a number of pine trees in order to provide a sheltered walk to the beach. So beautiful was the site that within the century some 60,000 inhabitants had settled there.
Today the population is approximately double the figure but, sadly, much of the Victorian aspects of the town no longer exist. However, if you enjoy Victoriana then a visit to the wonderful Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum will provide a wealth of assorted Victorian artworks and other items collected by the Russell-Cotes family hoteliers who benefited greatly by the Victorian boom of tourism to Bournemouth, which was boosted by the arrival of the railway in 1870.
Walking around the town you can not help noticing that there is a wealth of green space in Bournemouth. Parks and gardens abound and the amazing, award winning, Central Gardens work their way through the town centre. The extensive gardens add an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity which is greatly enjoyed by the numerous pensioners who have either retired to Bournemouth or reside in one of the many residential care homes in the town. While this has led to the town gaining a reputation for having an aged population this is balanced by an enormous number of younger folk who live in the town while studying.
Bournemouth has a large number of language schools (teaching English as a foreign language) and together with students attending Bournemouth University help to create a vibrant nightlife in stark contrast to the above mentioned reputation. This leads to a diverse range of facilities for the tourist and while many flock to the town to enjoy the miles of golden sands growing numbers of youngsters arrive to enjoy the nightlife and such things as surfing (especially in the suburb of Boscombe which now features a surf reef).
