England : East Sussex : Brighton

Brighton is seaside town resort in the county of East Sussex on the south coast of England. As well as being a town it is also part of a city as in the year 2000 the towns of Brighton, Hove and Portslade (and some smaller settlements) were given city status in the name of Brighton and Hove. The town may seem to be thouroughly modern and even the oldest parts appear to originate from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries however prior to the arrival of the railway, in 1841, Brighton was little more than a fishing village with a few smart terraces. In fact the origins of the resort can be traced right back to the time of the Domesday Book in which it appears under the name of "Bristelmestune". The 11th-century St. Nicholas' church is one of the few places to have survived an attack by the French in the summer of 1514 when the village was burnt to the ground. The small fishing village first began to see visitors in the middle of the eighteenth century when a physician from nearby Lewes began to prescribe the taking of seawater (bathing or drinking). By promoting the health benefits of seawater, especially of that around the area of Brighton, Dr. Richard Russell had basically started the town's tourist industry and many credit him as a major contributor to the populist trend of visiting the sea side which developed during that century.

Towards the end of the eighteenth century Georgian terraces had been built and the village of Bristelmestune became more widely known as the town of Brighton. In 1783 King George IV (then Prince Regent) paid his first visit to the town. The Prince continued to visit the town with his mistress and in 1786 he stayed at a rather large farmhouse which was later (1786) converted into the wonderfully extravagant Royal Pailion.
Today Brighton is a vibrant seaside resort which benefits from a huge number of young students who study at the many language schools, art college and two universities together with a thriving, long established, gay community (which holds the annual Gay Pride Festival at the beginning of July and the Brighton Parade). A popular month to visit the resort is May when for three weeks the place comes to life for the Brighton Festival and the Brighton and Hove Fringe Festival. Entertainment ranges from funfairs to the arty exhibitions and concerts, to the club nights and live music of the Fringe.
