Clifton Suspension Bridge, BristolBristol is a vibrant city, and ceremonial county, in the south west of England in the county of Gloucestershire and borders the counties of Somerset and Wiltshire. As The city recieved a Royal Charter in 1155 and prior to the Industrial Revolution it was once, in the 13th Century, of the top three cities outside of London. The city is perfectly situated on the River Avon at the point where it reaches the Bristol Channel. Very early on it's history the prosperity of Bristol has been closely linked with the sea and the Port of Bristol was incredibly important. By the early 19th Century the Bristol City Docks gained the name of the "Floating Harbour" after it was enclosed by locks and the River Avon was diverted. Unfortunately, as ships increased in size, navigation became increasingly difficult and by the end of the century it was necessary the Bristol Corporation to purchase thhe docks of Avonmouth and Portishead. Investment in nearby docks continues to this present day and in 1991 the Bristol City Council sold one hundred and fifty year lease of the Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks to "The Bristol Port Company". Following a huge investment of more than £330m the annual throughput of the docks has increased from 4m tonnes to 12m tonnes. It is estimated that the land in and around the city have been inhabited since the Palaeolithic era. By Roman Times Abona, a settlement in the area which is now the Bristol suburb of Sea Mills, was linked to Bath by a Roman road and archaelogical evidence shows that the during that time area featured various other Roman settlements, Villas and forts. By the start of the 11th Century a more substancial settlement called "Brycgstow" existed and the town was sufficiently important for the Normans to build a castle there.

 More About Bristol

In the 17th Century Bristol gained from the English expansions in the American colonies and in the following century the town became part of the Triangular Slave Trade (along with Liverpool further north). If you are interested in the history of the slave trade and you are visiting Bristol it is still possible to visit the Seven Stars Public House where Thomas Clarkson (famous abolitionist) collected information on the miserable trade. With such a rich and long cultural history Bristol makes for a brilliant vacation destination. The city features a wealth of historical sites of interest, fine architecture from a number of periods, numerous places of beauty, many museums and galleries as well as some of the latest entertainment facilities and visitor attractions.
