St. Edmundsbury cathedral, Bury St EdmundsBury St Edmunds is a wonderful historic market town in the county of Suffolk, England. Considered the finest town in the county, Bury St Edmunds is rich in archaeological treasures and is well known for having several places of religious and historical interest, especially the picturesque ruins of the Abbey close to the town centre.

Named, in 925, after St Edmund, who came to the area in as a teenager in the 9th century to become the last King of East Anglia, the town had grown around the site of Bury St Edmunds Abbey (which had become a place of pilgrimage). Unfortunately the abbey was dismantled after its Dissolution by Henry VIII but, today, the ruins (and gardens) make for an excellent place to have a picnic. Within the complex is the fantastic St Mary's Church which is well worth a visit.

The town has a fine selection of attractions, facilities and services so it makes for an excellent base for a touring vacation of the surrounding area. Places to visit include a number of villages such as the old-world village of Hengrave (3 miles north west).
