The River Stour in Canterbury, England. Canterbury is a Cathedral city in the county of Kent in the south east region of England in the United Kingdom. The city is the second most visited in the country due to its extensive history and supreme ecclesiastical importance. The history of Canterbury extends back beyond the 1st century. During the first century it was named "Durovernum Cantiacorum" by the Romans, and when they left Britain it was given the name "Cantwareburh".

Canterbury one of England's most venerable cities due to the long, and important association with Christianity. One of the most important local visitor attractions is Canterbury Cathedral. The cathedral is the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion and seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury (the head of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion).

Throughout this wonderfully picturesque walled settlement you continually find yourself confronted by historic structures spanning many, many centuries, all superbly presented in an easy to walk medieval town centre.

The beautiful River Stour (shown to the left) flows through the city and provides a superb setting for a relaxing punt and other recreational pastimes such as taking in the sun along the grassy river banks.
