Carlisle is the county capital of Cumbria in the North West of England, and the most northerly city in the country. As a UK vacation destination it is the most obvious place in which to base yourself for a touring vacation of Cumbria. You will easily spend a few days exploring this fascinating city.

While it would, on the face of it, appear that there are less visitor attractions to be found here than elsewhere there are numerous places to visit which are readily accessible including several castles, countless areas with the most breathtaking scenery (including the coast) and a host of highly interesting buildings. Furthermore the city also has great transport links with the rest of the country and Scotland (Newcastle, London (Euston station),and Glasgow).

Within the city itself you will find that most places of interest are relatively easy to get to on foot as an increasing amount of the city centre is pedestrianised making a visit more easy going and far less stressful than the usual city break.

In such a rural county it is not surprising that Carlise offers the best shopping experience for miles around. As well as this being the best place to stock up on essentials it is also a thoroughly enjoyable experience. At The Lanes shopping mall you will find a superb range of goods (and services) but most interesting is the centrally located Victorian covered market. As well as the usual large chain stores you will find numerous diverse shops down the many side streets which are well worth exploring. All around Carlisle are dotted superb architectural delights. At time it would seem that wherever you turn you find yet another fascinating building such as the former police station on Warwick Street or the Masonic Hall in Portland Square, Victoria Place and Chatsworth Square feature some excellent buildings.

Cumberland County Show (held annually at Rickerby Park). Look out for some of the many monuments, especially the Cursing Stone which can be found in the underpass running from Castle Street to Carlise Castle.
