Dover is a seaside town in the county of Kent in the South East of England. Located at the narrowest crossing point of the English Channel, to France, the town has long been an important strategic point and it is most well known for being an important ferry port. Therefore most people travelling to Dover will simply be doing so to travel elsewhere however the small town has some merit as a vacation destination itself. Although Dover has a history which stretches back to before the Roman Era much of the town's historic centre was destroyed during the Second World War. However sufficient historic sites and fascinating buildings remain to make Dover a place to visit for at least a couple of days. Archaeological finds show that the area was settled in the Stone Age and by the Bronze Age there was already a maritime connection. The most prominent historic site in Dover is the amazing Dover Castle (pictured below right).
Of course Dover can act as an excellent base for a touring vacation of Kent. Doing so gives you all the advantages of a huge selection of modern amenities while being within easy reach of gorgeous countryside and popular tourist attractions such as the cathedral city of Canterbury.
