England: Merseyside : Liverpool

Liverpool is a lively and vibrant city in Merseyside in the north west of England. The city was, at one time, the second city of the British Empire. From around 1660 the city traded with America and the West Indies and the town saw rapid growth. In 1699 the first recorded slave ship, the Liverpool Merchant, sailed for Africa. In 1715 world's very first commercial wet dock opened in Liverpool, this inspired investment ensured further growth and by the end of the Eighteenth Century ships docking in the port accounted for eighty percent of the UK slave trade and 40% of the world slave trade. In 1799 the trade peaked at over 45,000 slaves sailing from Liverpool and the incoming wealth was so immense that the town became a major financial centre beaten into second place by the nation's capital, London. Even today there exists major embarrassment with regards to the slave trade. All will agree that the trade was despicable but to fully understand the nasty business we must place ourselves in the time. In the United Kingdom 1799 was an eventful year, most will associate the year with the above mentioned fact that it was the very peak of the slave trade but personally 1799 brings to mind the plight of the salt panners and coal miners in Scotland. Few people understand that that year saw the eventual end of a type of serfdom (in these industries) which, in effect, was slavery. Prior to 1775, when an Act was passed abolishing serfdom w(which came to it's natural conclusion in 1775) anybody who worked as a miner for more than a year effectually became the property of the mine owner! Thankfully attitudes towards slavery were beginning to change and by the middle of the Nineteenth Century, following several Acts, slavery was abolished across the British Empire. [To find out more about the Atlantic slave trade take a look at the excellent article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_slave_trade].

Those who grew rich from the slave trade invested their new found wealth both locally and abroad. Many feel that an element of guilt played some part in the massive civic investment that accompanied the growth in the slave trade however the truth was, more than likely, just plain old civic pride. Today Liverpool benefits greatly from the investments of the Victorians and the city is home to numerous fine buildings, world class art galleries and museums (which include superb exhibitions on slavery).
Sadly the city fell into sharp decline after the slave trade and this remained the case until very recently. During the 1960's Liverpool became world renowned for it's music, particularly the Beatles, and the upbeat and humorous Liverpudlians (inhabitants of Liverpool who are also known as scousers) became the most popular band of all time.
Today the city has changed radically following massive investment but the vast majority of well known landmarks remain. Much is made of the relationship with the Beatles but it is not overpowering and wandering around the city centre you will quickly discover many of the reasons why Liverpool was the European City of Culture in 2009. This vibrant and cosmopolitan city is an excellent place to take a short city break.
