England: Manchester

Manchester

Town, Postcode, Attraction

Manchester is found in the North West of England east of the nearby city of Liverpool and north of the Cheshire Plain. To the north and east of Manchester are the Pennines, a low rising mountain range often referred to as "the backbone of England".

Although the history of Manchester can be traced back to the building of the Roman fort of Mamucium, around 79 AD, by 1750 it was little more than a small village. Over the next one hundred years, during the Industrial Revolution, the city grew enormously. Spurned by the rapid growth of the textile industry the city's population grew into the world's first industrialised city (being granted city status in 1853). The textile industry was so large that the city gained the nickname of "Cottonopolis".

Following the decline of the textile industry the whole city suffered sharp decline and the period of the 1960's and 1970's is looked upon as a dark time in the history of Manchester. However the city set upon reinventing itself and today the city is considered a major success. Today the economy is mainly service based but the economy of Manchester is one of the fasted growing in the UK. The city has the largest UK office market outside of London and is one of the largest financial centres in Europe.

One of the best places in the city for nightlife. (Pictured above). Manchester is renowned for its amazing (and legendary) pubs, clubs and music venues.

Chinatown
Britain's largest Chinese community (the oldest is in Liverpool). If you visit the city during the Chinese New Year celebrations it is well worth taking the time to attend.

Coronation Street
Take a tour of the set of the well known ITV soap opera at Granada Studios, where you can visit the famous Rovers Return Inn (shown to the right).

Manchester United Museum & Tour
Old Trafford should be the very first stop for all fans of Manchester United Football Club visiting the city. There are intense rivalries between Man. U and Manchester City but some would argue that the rivalries between their nearby rivals Liverpool FC are even more intense. If you get the chance to see a match between these clubs you are almost guaranteed to see English football at its very best.
