England: Tyne and Wear: Newcastle

Newcastle is an amazingly vibrant city found on the north bank of the River Tyne in the north east of England. Famed for its incredible nightliffe the city has, in recent decades, grown considerably in popularity as a destination for short weekend city breaks but is equally suitable for a longer vacation.
With a very strong association with the mining industry (which dates back to at least the fourteenth century) Newcastle sufferec greatly when the incustry fell into sharp decline. However the city pulled itself up and is now a thriving city associated with business and culture.
In recent years Newcastle has teamed with Gateshead (from across the water) to promote tourism in the form of Newcastle-Gateshead. The idea has seen increased interest in the area which has an incredible selection of diverse visitor attractions and places of interest.
During its heyday Newcastle produced 25% of the world's shipping and much of the revenue generated was invested in local building projects and today only London and Bath have more listed buildings. You will find the best selection of listed buildings in the Grainger Town part of Newcastle. Newcastle suffered greatly when industrial decline hit and it took some time for the city to reinvent itself but today it is something of a centre for art and this is most apparent in the spectacular work of Andrew Gormley, Angel of the North which is the same size as a jumbo jet and is pretty hard to miss, especially if you are arriving by road or rail from the south.
Newcastle upon Tyne has a massive selection of places of interest and things to do but within only a short distance you will find even more making the city a brilliant place in which to base yourself for a touring vacation of this part of England. Public transport is rather good and much better than elsewhere in the UK so getting to nearby attractions is incredibly easy. Places to look out for include Wallsend, Segedunum, Tynemouth, Jarrow, Gibside and Cherryburn, South Shields and the South Tyneside coast, plus you are not too far from the city of Sunderland and all that that city offers the tourist.
