Northampton is a very large town in Northamptonshire, England. and, as you may have guessed from the name, it is the county town. Strangely there are no cities in the county and although Northampton is the largest town that is not a city it failed to gain city status during the Millenium celebrations when many other towns became cities.

Often overlooked as a British vacation destination, in favour of more popular places such as Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick, the town is a great place to stay while taking a vacation touring the surrounding countryside. Most famously the county is home to two superb, and rare, examples of a Saxon church but you will find many other fascinating churches and lovely villages all within a short distance of Northampton.

The town itself has a small selection of visitor attractions and although virtually the whole town was destroyed by fire, in 1675, many of the buildings which sprung up remain for us to enjoy today. Most of these buildings are found surrounding the central Market Square (pictured to the left) or not too far from it. Of special interest is Guildhall with its flamboyan Victorian style featuring a Gothic exterior with masonry depicting kings & queens but also various aspects of the region's history.

Museums & Art Galleries Abington Museum and the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery which has various exhibits including an informative display about the town's shoe trade for which the town became famous. You will still find a coupel of shoe manufacturers in Northampton and plenty of shoe shops selling such things as locally produced Dr Marten's boots.

Getting To Northampton
Road The town has excellent road links so getting there by car should not be much of a problem. The M1 motorway passes through the county and if you leave the motorway at junctions 5, 15A or 16 you should only be around 15 minutes from the town centre.
Bus & Coach You will find that Greyfriars bus station in the town centre has bus services to various destinations with National Express providing coaches to various places across the country.
Rail Northampton's railway station, Northampton Castle Station, has regular train services from London Euston and Birmingham and as the town is about half way between these two cities it should take you about an hour to get to Northampton from either. The train station is about a fifteen minute walk from the very centre of town but buses and taxis are available.
Air London Luton and Birmingham East Midlands airports are the nearest to the town however you will not add too much time to your journey travelling from airports at Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted Airports in London.
Alternatives The Grand Union Canal runs right through the town so it is possible to travel to Northampton by boat or by narrowboat (which is an extremely relaxing mode of transport which is incredibly popular these days).
