Plymouth is a city in the county of Devon, England. Set on the coast the city is just under 200 miles (310 km) from London. As a UK vacation destination the city is most well known for being the place where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World in 1620. Throughout its history Plymouth has had an extremely strong association with the sea and today the port is a popular visitor attraction.
The city of Plymouth is situated on what is considered one of the world's most impressive natural harbours, between the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar. It was this natural harbour which so greatly helped the city become one of the most important ports in England. Due to its close proximity to France & Spain, it became the British Navy's most important port and is remembered for being the place from which Sir Francis Drake saw the oncoming Spanish Armada and from where he set sail to defeat it in 1588. In 1690 the Royal Dockyard was built on the banks of the River Tamar and the Royal Navy has an immense presence to this day.
The city is an incredibly popular vacation destination and while there are plenty of visitor attractions in Plymouth many people choose to stay in the city so that they can explore the surrounding Devonshire countryside, the astounding coastline and other cities such as Exeter.
