Scarborough is a popular seaside resort in the county of North Yorkshire, England. This highly enterprising town (winner of several awards for entrepreneurship) was firstly popular for its mineral springs (during the seventeenth century) and this was followed by bathing which remained popular until the Victorian era. During the 1950's Scarborough saw a dramatic increase in popularity and visitors flooded to the town to enjoy the likes of donkey rides along the golden sands.

During the fifties Scarborough was mainly popular with the working classes, mainly factory workers from nearby towns, and while this remains somewhat true today the town is a great deal more than "sand, sea, kitsch amusement arcades and kiss me quick hats". Probably the most striking feature, of the town, is the sight of Scarborough Castle which sits up high on a rocky promontory. Situated between two pretty sandy bays, the site has provided a wealth of archaeological information including relics from the Bronze and Iron ages, evidence of a Roman signalling station, a Viking camp and Saxon and Norman chapels. It is believed that the town gains its name from the Viking camp which was reputedly built by a Viking who went by the name of "Scardi". Museums & Art Galleries The Rotunda Museum and Scarborough Art Gallery gain the most publicity but there are other places to visit including Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life, Crescents Arts, Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum, Grosmont Gallery & Jazz Café, the South Street Gallery plus the wonderful Millenium, an innovative living museum on Harbourside and Wood End Museum & Art Gallery (natural history featuring local wildlife). The Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby, Filey Museum, Malton Museum and the Robin Hood's Bay Museum are nearby.
Parks & Gardens, Places Of Natural Beauty The Walled Garden at Scampston is a popular 18th century walled garden. The Bridestones and Crosscliff Estate covers and area of 488ha, Hazelhead Lake is excellent for fishing. Peasholm Park (shown to the right) and Peasholm Island are extremely pretty places.
Scarborough Visitor Attractions The Sea Life Centre is extremely popular and other family tourist atttractions include Atlantis (water-based activities), Betton Farm, Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo, Grainary Wildlife Farm, Kinderland, the Moorland Trout Farms and Terror Tower. Historical Buildings In Scarborough All Saints Church, Church of St-Martin-on-the-Hill, Church of St Mary, the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Ebberston Hall, Methodist Church (built 1811), Peak Alum Works (industrial archaeological remains), Scampston Hall and Scarborough Castle.
Other Places To Visit In Or Near Scarborough Scarborough Star Disk is the largest illuminated "Star Disk" anywhere in Britain and can be found at the South end of the South Beach. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, the North Bay Miniature Railway and Orchard Farm Holiday Village Railway should keep railway enthusiasts happy. Filey Beach, Robin Hood's Bay and the Ravenscar coastline are well worth a visit. Pickering Castle is also a great place for a day out. If you are in your own vehicle take a look at the 9 mile scenic drive detailed at Dalby Forest Drive and Visitor Centre. Theatres in Scarborough include the Futurist Theatre, Spa Theatre and Stephen Joseph Theatre.

Getting To Scarborough
Road From York take the A64. From Hull follow the A165. Arriving by via the M62 join the M1/A1 and then join the A64. Other routes to Scarborough include the A170 and A171.
Bus & Coach From Whitby get buses 93 or X93. From Leeds get the 843 which goes via York. National Express coaches arrive at the train station.
Rail Trains arrive from Hull (37 miles away), Leeds (66 miles away) and York (35 miles away). TransPennine Express run trains from York on an hourly basis. Northern Rail run services from Bridlington and Hull.
Air Durham-TeesValley airport (44.1 miles)) is the nearest but a little further away are Humberside (HUY) (49.4 miles ) and Leeds Bradford airport (58.5 miles). However many people arrive at Manchester Airport, and catch a TranspennineExpress train.
