What You Need To Know About Laser Hair Removal
By Wendy Simons

A great many people have problems of too much hair (hair overgrowth) on various parts of their bodies. For people who simply can not stand this excess hair on their body, they should seriously consider the popular treatment called laser hair removal.

Possibly the best thing about laser hair removal treatment is that you can get rid of the excess hair on your body with minimum discomfort. The treatment doesn't take too long and the patient is not required to stay in the hospital for the treatment. For most people, the hair removal is permanent (the hair does not really regrow after the laser hair removal treatment).

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

In laser hair removal there are at least four different types of laser lights commonly used by doctors. The Alexandrite, the ruby, the diode and the ND and LP ND Yag or the Candela Gentle Yag which are considered to be the safest in relation to laser hair removal.

Technically, laser hair removal treatment works by sending the laser light down to the hair follicles killing the roots of the hair. Dermatologists are careful to use sufficient laser light to destroy the hair follicles but not too much leaving the surrounding tissues unharmed. If the roots of the hair are completely destroyed, the hair can not grow again. In some cases,(when the root is not killed completely but only partially damaged) the hair manages to grow back but the hair is now much finer and less visible to the naked eye, certainly a great improvement on how it was previously.

How Does the Laser Beam Find the Hair Follicles?

To help in identifying the hair follicles the dermatologist focuses on the dark color of the hair to help guides him to the target. Therefore the laser beam is targeted on the portions of the patients skin that are dark colored. Using this method laser hair removal treatment relies on the contrast between the colors of the skin and color of the persons hair, this means that not everyone is suitable for this type of hair removal treatment.

People who have very light colored, pale, skin or very dark colored skin are not usually suitable for this type of procedure. Dermatologists have found that very fair people more often have very fair hair this makes distinguishing the skin from the hair follicles incredibly difficult and almost impossible.

Equally so, dark skinned people have a similar problem with the identification of the hair from the skin is considerably more difficult as they, more often than not, have dark colored hair. It is very dangerous to just point the laser beam to non-specific areas of the skin. Thereofre dermatologists would rather avoid the use of laser hair removal on very fair or very dark types of skin.
