Laser Hair Removal, An Introduction
By Wendy Simons

Laser hair removal (LHR) is, to me, all of my most recent prayers answered. At last there is a means to obtain permanent hair removal and without the need for drugs or surgery! After many years of experimentation it really looks like this is well and truly the solution to excess facial hair or excess body hair, an embarrassing problem for men and women of all ages.

Laser hair removal is still pretty costly to have done at a clinic so I have taken a look at the options available for home laser hair removal and could only find one machine worthy of further investigation

Home Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is quickly becoming popular in he home. I have, just recently, seen several advertisements about a small selection of home laser hair removal kits so I decided to investigate further. I took a look at the Viatek HairPro Laser Hair Removal System (see link to left). The technical bumf on this laser hair removal machine states that it offers the home user the benefits of personal hair removal but without the pain usually associated with electrolysis or LHR. This sounds great so far, painless hair removal with various intensity levels, unique patented technology that is safe with a 100% satisfaction guarantee Ah, the 100% guarantee usually gets me so I decided to read on but unfortunately I found it incredibly difficult to find further info. The company seem to produce a few hair care related products so I have decided to order one from Amazon as I am sure that they would honor the 100% guarantee. I will try to remember to add some comments to this article when I have had a chance to test the machine.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

It is interesting that many services advertised as LHR are not actually performed with the use of lasers, rather they use a very high intensity light called "full-spectrum intense pulsed light" or IPL which is produced by a xenon flsh lamp. However, as better and cheaper, laser hair removal machines become available the use of IPL is declining.

In it's true form laser hair removal uses the fine laser beam to selectively target areas of the hair follicle and destroy it thus inhibiting hair growth. I am being very careful here when I say that laser hair removal only reduces hair growth as I had assumed that "permanent hair removal" meant just that - the hair was removed never to grow again.

During my research into LHR I discovered that the laser is only capable of reaching a depth of around 2 mm and this is VERY important. The reason for understanding this is that the part of the hair that is most active in hair growth goes to a depth of around 7mm. Further investigation revealed that the FDA allow the use of the word permanent as laser hair removal does have an impact on hair growth which can last for a full cycle. LHR clinics advise that a six month course of treatments followed by "top-ups".

It was for this reason I decided to investigate home laser hair removal as the sad truth is that I simply can not afford to be going backwards and forwards to the salon :-(

I have seen the results of salon laser hair removal and they are great, a vast improvement on other methods of hair removal and therefore, in my opinion, the best option - if you can afford the cost.

The articles below look at LHR and related subject in more detail and I hope that you find them useful and informative.
