Man's Best Friend, And All That...
Pets are everywhere - It's raining cats & dogs, man's best friend etc. all common phrases in use today but with roots in our association with the domesticated animal. Most of the phrases have pleasant roots, others not and some have their roots lost in time which goes to show how long we have had pets.
The family pet is another member of the family. Even the family goldfish is held in the affections of our children and the lengths we go to protect our children when we have to take our pets to the vet.
The most common pets are cats and dogs and while we often refer to cats and dogs fighting the arguments that I have witnessed between cat lovers and dog lovers were vicious to say the least. I love both and have found that cats and dogs get on extremely well together if they are allowed to get on with it and sort out who is boss.
Take Pet Care Seriously
I love dogs but sadly I take my responsibilities as a pet owner very seriously and that, unfortunately means that I can not own one. You see the problem is that I love big dogs and loathe those little tiny yappy things that you often see in pairs or even triplets! Large dogs can be exxpensive to keep as they eat so much food and the vets bills can cripple even the largest purse but this is not the problem. The fact is that animals need to have plenty of exercise and large animals need the most.
Cats are creatures that pretty much look after themselves and "allow" you the pleasure of their company from time to time. They are more than capable of finding ways in which to exercise. I once owned 2 cats in a small 1 bed flat and they would take delight chasing each other around and running up the wall that was covered in a hessian type wallpaper - absolutely hilarious when we had visitors who had not witnessed this before but a little tiring while you are trying to watch something serious on television.
Pet Exercise Is Very Important
Anyways, I was saying about pets and exercise and especially dogs, you see large dogs need so much exercise that I simply do not have the ability to provide it. I have seen dogs that do not get enough and it is more than sad it is an abuse. They clearly suffer mental anguish and their unnatural lifestyle ends up with them being rather unhealthy and far from the lean mean machine that it is supposed to be.
It's A Dog's Life
Obese Pets = Abuse: A recent court case in the United Kingdom highlighted the growing problem of obese pets. The dog has been removed from it's owners and had been cared for properly by the RSPCA until the trial. The result of the case was that the pet was returned to the two brothers even though it was still very much overwheight. With the increasing number of children suffering from obesity it is no wonder the pets suffer too. It is high time that people woke up to the importance of good diet and healthy exercise for themselves and their pets.
If a dog truly is a man's best friend it is about time he treated it that way!
