Scotland: Aberdeen: Shopping

Town, Postcode, Attraction

Aberdeen's Belmont Street MarketAberdeen has, for centuries, been the main shopping area in North East Scotland and following the opening of the new £275million Union Square development it is hoped that this will continue for some years yet.

The main competition for shopping in Aberdeen comes from the central belt (mainly Glasgow and Edinburgh) and it is hoped that the opening of this new complex will entice more people to shop locally. More bold retailers hope that the new shopping centre will actually draw shoppers from the central belt itself. 2009 is being hailed as a pivotal year for the city's retail sector as more and more top retail names have opened Aberdeen stores.

Besides the new Union Square Aberdeen Shopping Centre, at Guild Street, Aberdeen has a number of other malls and shopping centres; Bon Accord in George Street, St Nicholas Centre opposite Bon Accord, The Mall on Union Street and The Academy on Schoolhill as well as a fantastic selection of smaller independent shops selling all manner of goods and street markets such as the Belmont Street Market pictured above left. With such an amazing array of department stores, shops and boutiques it is little wonder that visitors from as far afield as Norway travel to Aberdeen purely to indulge in shopping.

At the moment the new shopping centre is called Union Square but Aberdeen City Council are in dispute with the developers (Hammerson) as the Council would much prefer it to be called "Guild Square" because the shopping complex is on Guild Street rather than it being off Union Street and they believe the current name will cause confusion.

Below you will find information about the various shopping centres in Aberdeen including details of what stores you will find there and other important information.
