Scotland: Glasgow: Glasgow Cathedral

Town, Postcode, Attraction

Glasgow CathedralGlasgow Cathedral is one of Glasgow's most important buildings but it is only one of several "Glasgow Cathedrals", the others being; The Greek Orthodox, St Luke's Cathedral, The Scottish Episcopal, St. Mary's Cathedral and the Roman Catholic St. Andrew's Cathedral. Glasgow Cathedral is the Church of Scotland's cathedral who call it the High Kirk of Glasgow and many know it as the Glasgow Cathedral Of St Kentigern (or St Mungo).

Glasgow Cathedral History

Glasgow Cathedral is the only medieval cathedral in Scotland to survive the Scottish Reformation in it's entirity. Most of the other cathedrals in Scotland were either reduced to ruins or were in need of so much repair that little remains of the original building. For the most part what we see of Glasgow Cathedral is 13th century but it's origins go back much further.

In the 6th century St Kentigern established a church and religious community in the cemetery at Cathures which had been consecrated by St Ninian in the 5th century. Cathures, the church and religious community became the very roots of the city of Glasgow.

St Mungo (St Kentigern) died, in 612, and was buried at the site. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries a cult of St Kentigern developed and the church was replaced by a much grander building which housed the tomb of Mungo. Over the next few centuries Glasgow Cathedral grew both in size and stature and in 1541 the pope declared that a pilgrimage to the cathedral had the same standing as a pilgrimage to Rome.

In 1560, during the Scottish Reformation the cathedral suffered some serious damage, including the loss of the roof, but fourteen years later Glasgow citizens themselves financed the required repairs. While most of what we see today is how it would have appeared throughout the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, the original cathedral building featured two western towers. During restoration works in the 1840s it was deemed necessary to demolish and rebuild the towers. The two towers were demolished but the money ran out before they could be rebuilt.

Today the area around the cathedral is a very pleasant area which has a visitor centre and the wonderful St. Mungo's Museum of Religious Art and Life.
