Scotland: Stirling : Bannockburn Heritage Centre

The Robert Bruce Monument BannockburnThe Bannockburn Heritage Centre, on the southern outskirts of Stirling, is run by the National Trust for Scotland. Situated at Bannockburn the centre celebrates & commemorates Scotland's greatest victory over an invading English army at the Battle of Bannockburn on the 23 and 24 of June 1314.

Robert The Bruce gathered his army to stand against the superior forces of King Edward II of England. Vastly ou tnumbered and facing a professional army better equipped than his own men Bruce was able to use his intelect to his advantage. Maybe it was the planning of Bruce and his officers or maybe it was the fact that his men were fighting for their freedom from English oppression, or maybe it was because the English army had marched for six days before the battle, for whatever reason the Scottish army demolished Edward's army and remains today one of Scotland's proudest days. You can discover much more about the Battle of Bannockburn at this fantastic visitor attraction which is both entertaining and highly educational.

To the left, and below right, you can see the famous statue of Robert The Bruce, by Pilkington Jackson.

Many aspects of the centre are family friendly and as well as the facilities mentioned below the centre offers a children's guide, children's quiz, living history / storytelling and even costumes for the children to try on.

Although the centre does not have a restaurant it does sell tea, coffee, snacks and the likes, in the gift shop and there is a large park alongside which is highly suitable for picnics.

Schools are well catered for with the Bannockburn Heritage Centre offering such things as education packs and even an education room, however it is vitally important that School visits should always be made by prior arrangement and you should usually allow about two hours for the full tour.
