Scotland: Stirling : Stirling Castle

Town, Postcode, Attraction

Stirling CastleStirling Castle is considered by many to be the finest and grandest castle in the whole of Scotland and when the current resoration works are complete there will be few folk disputing this. The castle really is a "must see" visitor attraction and while Edinburgh Castle remains the more popular it is envisaged that visitor numbers will increase dramatically over the next few years. The last time we visited Stirling Castle we were amazed at the dedication to detail and it was clear that at every stage much research had been done to ensure the project was true to history.

Standing proud about two hundred and fifty feet fixed firm to the huge volcanic outcrop below, the castle has a truly awesome setting with magnificent views across the city of Stirling and the surrounding countryside.

Getting Around Stirling Castle

You should allow at least a couple of hours for a full tour of the castle but if your mobility is impaired you may find the going tough. Although there is wheelchair access to some parts (including the castle apartments) there are some areas which are impossible to access using and these include; the Museum of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the medieval kitchens and the Elphinstone Tower. I [the author] use walking sticks and found that it was necessary for me to take short rests after moving from one place to another. you will find that there are wooden benches here and there and these are very much appreciated after a walk up a steep incline or following an ascent and descent of a flight of stairs.
