The Wallace Monument Overlooking Stirling, ScotlandThe National Wallace Monument in Stirling, is a Victorian Gothic tower some 220 feet (67m) in height and made even more domineering by the fact it is built upon a wooded rocky crag, called Abbey Craig, where Wallace stood to monitor the movements of the English army prior to the famous battle of Stirling Bridge. The battle, on 11th September, 1297, saw Wallace win a famous victory over the vastly more numerous, and much better equipped, English army.

Financed by public subscription it was built to commemorate Sir William Wallace (1267-1305), Scotland's famous freedom fighter and patriot and enemy of the English King, Edward I. The monument opened in 1869 having received financial support from around the world including a host of expats, European leaders and well known folk such as Garibaldi (Italian patriot).

Though the Wallace Monument looks inaccessible it is actually extremely easy to reach via a shuttle bus which runs from the visitor centre carpark to the top of the crag via a tarmac road. Of course you could walk to the top but if you decide to explore the naturalised woods please take care to remain on the footpaths at all times as there are some very dangerous areas which include shear drops. Although the exploration of the woods is highly enjoyable it is advisable to do this after you have visited the monument as the only access to the very top is a stairway featuring 246 steep steps.

The Wallace Monument is much more than a simple tower to explore, it features three chambers housing the "Scottish Hall of Heroes" and the "Building the Monument" Exhibition. The Building the Monument Exhibition covers all aspects of the monument including the design competition and some of the problems which faced the Victorian craftsmen during its construction. The Scottish Hall of Heroes features a number of famous Scots scultured in marble. Besides the likes of Robert the Bruce, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns you will also find inventors and explorers such as James Watt and David Livingstone.

Facilities include a coffee shop and souvenir gift shop with a picnic area and parking. Disabled Access.
