Scotland: Ayr

Town, Postcode, Attraction

Ayr BeachAyr is the largest town on the Firth of Clyde, and the largest, by population, in the county of Ayrshire. The town has been a royal burgh since the very beginning of the 13th Century and is ideally situated to be one of the finest vacation destinations in Scotland.

The area is most widely known for it's many associations with Scotland's National Bard, and favourite son, Robert Burns. Rabbie Burns was born in Alloway, South Ayrshire (about 2 miles/3 km from Ayr), the son of William Burness who was a hard working tenant farmer. The house in which he was born is now the superb Burns Cottage Museum, which should be visited by all who visit the area and is extremely popular with visitors from around the world.

Travelling around Ayrshire it would seem, at times, that wherever you go you will never be more than five minutes away from something associated with Burns such as a statue or monument. Of course the town of Ayr has much more to offer the visitor and the area has a number of interesting features which make it worthwhile taking the time to tour around a little.

Ayrshire is renowned for having a mild climate, this is due to the effects of the sea and the generally low and flat ground. Nearby Glasgow Prestwick International Airport is rarely closed because of bad weather, fog or snow (which is rare) and the weather is genrally mild in the winter and slightly cooler than elsewhere during the warmer summer months.
