Scotland: Dundee

Town, Postcode, Attraction

Dundee from the airDundee is, fourth largest city in Scotland situated on the north bank of the Firth of Tay on Scotland's Eact coast. The dity has a long association with the wool trade but is more widely known for the production of marmalade. The region shows evidence of inhabitation from as far back as the Mesolithic period and has continually adapted to become one of the most progressive cities in Scotland. When the wool industry fell into decline the weavers of the area developed their skills in weaving jute (a cheaper material). Another trade associated with Dundee City is that of journalism and the city is commonly called the city of "jam, jute and journalism".

Today Dundee is changing once again with an increasing diversity in trade and industry. Customer service, like elsewhere in Scotland, plays a vital role in the local economy but other growing industries include high-tech manufacturing and biotechnology, with the local educational institutions helping in the area of research With a wealth of new investment Dundee has seen a dramatic increase in investment in infrastructure, public facilities and a comprehensive range of sporting and leisure facilities, making it a superb vacation destination in Scotland.

Dundee City is superbly placed to take advantage of the nearby cities of Glasgow (2 hours south west), Edinburgh (1.5 hours south) and Aberdeen (1.25 miles north). Coupled with the fact that the city has a superb standard of living and plenty of affordable housing it is little wonder that Dundee is developing fast and is very popular with commuters to the mentioned cities. For the tourist this means that you can take advantage of relatively cheaper accommodation while being within easy reach of some of Scotland's finest cities.
