Scotland: Fort William
|
|
Fort William is, now, after Inverness became a city, the largest town in the Highlands of Scotland. It is an extremely popular coastal resort with something of a difference, most people visit the town to enjoy the area around the town rather than within it. One of the most popular attractions in the vicinity is Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the British Isles.
Found at the far end of the Great Glen, with Inverness at the other, Fort William sits in a stunning position on Loch Linnhe with Ben Nevis towering above. Walking around the town you very quickly realise that it is an extremely busy hillwalking, climbing and mountain biking centre. Along the High Street you will find various shops selling clothing and equipment for these sports along with an unusually high number of shops selling tourist items such as tins of shortbread, kilts, tea towels and other such items as well as some very high quality items such as locally produce jewellery and art.
Many people visit Fort William simply to stock up on supplies as the town has a number of amenities not found until you reach Inverness. While the supermarket is great for food and everyday items it is well worth taking the time to look around the town which actually has a number of saving graces. While much of the character of Fort William was destroyed by development in the 1950s and the actual "Fort William" was demolished to make way for the train station the local council has been working hard to correct some of this damage and in recent years there has been a marked improvement. However the seafront is still something of a problem and though some solutions have been suggested it will be a long time before the town receives the glorious seafront it merits.
In recent years Fort William has become famous for something completely new. For years now the spectacular local scenery has featured in many movies including Highlander and Braveheart but the phenomenon that is Harry Potter brings more to the area than any other film. The reason for this is that the Jacobite Steam Train, the one used in the movie, can be seen at Fort William and many take the day trip to Mallaig simply to take a ride on it. Fans will also want to visit the Glenfinnan Viaduct about 17 miles away.
