Scotland: Glasgow
|
|
Glasgow is an exciting, vibrant, lively but also an historic city in Scotland. It is strange that we do not usually associate such words with each other but that is very much the nature of Glasgow, expect the unexpected. Do not be surprised to find that Dr Who has landed right in the middle of one of the busiest shopping districts in the city and do not find it too surprising when you notice that nobody really gives the T.A.R.D.I.S. a second glance. In fact you will see several of these old police boxes here and there all over the city. There is a plaque on the one on the corner of of Buchanan Street & Gordon Street (shown at the very bottom of this page) and some even serve as coffee kiosks.
Of course there is lots lots more to Glasgow than a Tardis or two but this is one of the things that struck me on my very first visit. The other thing that struck me was the way in which words are pronounced, it was my first visit to Scotland but I still had no excuse of pronouncing the word Buchanan Street incorrectly as I knew a Mr Buchanan so I knew it was pronounced more like Biew can an (biew as in view). I don't know if I am more embarrassed at asking the guy where "Buck an an" Street was or the fact that I was actually standing on it, all the poor guy could do was point at the street sign laughing, I won't tell you how Kirkcudbirght is pronounced but it certainly isn't "Kirk Cud Bright" as most first time visitors believe, at least I got that one right.
Glasgow is a city with something for everyone, it's the largest city in Scotland so you would expect almost as much as you would from the nation's capital but somehow Glasgow seems to over provide in some areas. Certainly the city has the best nightlife in Scotland but it cannot compete with the ancient buildings of Edinburgh. That is not to say that there is no architecture of merit, no, quite the contrary and in fact some of the most important buildings in Scotland exist in this wonderful city.

Things To See & Do In Glasgow
The vast majority of old buildings in Glasgow date from the Victorian period when the city was the second city of the British Empire and the selection of Victorian civic buildings is unrivaled in Scotland. For many people the highlight of Glasgow's architecture is the Charles Rennie Mackintosh masterpiece of the Glasgow School of Art and you will find many works of this most astounding Scottish architect, designer, and watercolourist dotted around the city, not least Miss Cranston's Tearooms. I shall not write too much more about the city here but please follow the links below to discover more about why Glasgow is such a superb choice for a vacation destination in Scotland and the United Kingdom.
