Scotland: Glenfinnan

Town, Postcode, Attraction

Glenfinnan MonumentGlenfinnan is most well known for it's Bonnie Prince Charlie connections, being home to the Glenfinnan Monument, the Glenfinnan Viaduct and, in more recent years, Hogwarts' Express (The Jacobite steam train).

Unless you knew about the village of Glenfinnan you could be forgiven for driving through it as it is something of a rambling village which stretches along the A830 between Fort William and Mallaig. You may well notice a few pretty buildings but unless you stop and take a good look around you will miss some of the most amazing views in this part of Scotland.

As well as the suggestions given below there are plenty of things to see and do in the area around Glenfinnan. Loch Shiel is the most obvious attraction as it is huge but to get the best views you need to take one of the side roads down to the Loch, drive to the Glenfinnan Monument or head for the superb Gothic St Mary & St Finnan Church.

If you like mountain biking then you will love this village and you will also find that a few cycling routes pass through the village. Highly popular with walkers and ramblers Glenfinnan also caters for visitors who enjoy the game of golf, well, not really, but the excellent 9 hole course at Traigh is only three quarters of an hour away, there's another 9 hole at Spean Bridge and a full 18 hole golf course at Fort William - which helps make the village superb for golfers.
