Inverness is the capital city of the Highlands. Granted city status as part of the Millenium celebrations the city only has a population of around 70,000 although this is boosted considerably by tourists during the summer months.

Situated at the northern end of the Great Glen (An Gleann Mòr), between the shores of the Moray Firth and the head of Loch Ness, the city is surrounded by the most astonishing countryside suitable for various types of vacation. The coastline has a number of sandy beaches and there are a few seal colonies which you can see while on a boat trip, however, Inverness itself is a great place to base yourself for a vacation touring this part of Scotland.

If you enjoy your night life then Inverness will not disappoint as the city has a very lively night scene with excellent clubs and pubs which often feature live music. There is a theatre and there is a reasonable choice of places to eat ranging from the usual burger and chips places to the more upmarket restaurants.

During the month of June the Rockness music festival takes place near to the city and for the week leading up to the event the town comes alive with several small "warm up" events. Later, in the month of August, the Tartan Heart music festival takes place in nearby Belladrum. This is a small, family friendly, music festival which features a number of small marquees as well as the main stage which sits in a natural amphitheatre.

Inverness Leisure
Open all year the leisure centre is a great place to take the family. Facilities available include leisure waters, a health suite, climbing wall, sports hall and gym. If you have small children there is a creche available and you can grab a bite to eat at the small café.

Inverness Victorian Market
This beautiful covered market features over forty shops and stalls in the Market Hall and Market Arcade. You can easily pass a couple of hours wandering around the fascinating shops looking at ornate celtic jewellery and typical Scottish gifs such as bagpipes!

Eastgate Centre
With more than sixty shops this is where you will find all of the modern department and chain stores such as Argos, Boots, Debenhams, Gap, H&M, HMV, Marks and Spencer and Waterstones.

Inverness Museum And Art Gallery
The museum & gallery are open all year and is free to enter. You will find the museum on Castle Wynd.

Top Places To Visit Near Inverness

Loch Ness
The famous home of Nessie the Loch Ness Monster. Though it is unlikely you will meet the beast a trip to this 24 mile long loch is a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Urquhart Castle
Situated on the banks of Loch Ness, at Drumnadrochit, and open all year Urquhart Castle visitor centre includes an interesting audio-visual display to compliment your exploration of the ruined castle. You can easily pass a couple of hours here but be aware that the last entry is at around 3.45pm. Shop and restaurant.

Cawdor Castle
Found at Nairn, about 16 miles from Inverness, Cawdor is the most romantic of Highland castles. The 14th century castle features fine tapestries, paintings, furniture and gardens. Severala hours can be spent wandering around the castle and gardens, you can go on nature trails or even play a round or two of golf. Shop and restaurant.
