Scotland: Stirling

Town, Postcode, Attraction

Stirling, ScotlandStirling is considered by many to be one of Scotland's most beautiful cities. Clustered around the domineering castle the town spreads from medieval twisting roads into a sprawling modern city with it's residencial areas and industrial estates. This description may, at first, make Stirling sound like many other modern cities but Stirling benefits enormously by having countless historical buildings with Stirling Castle being highly visible. Furthermore the city is surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in Scotland and while the city lies on relatively flat ground it is surrounded by spectacular mountains.

To the left is a photograph taken from just outside Stirling Castle looking over to the Wallace Monument (shown below) in the distance. In between you can just make out some of the buildings of the city of Stirling.

Stirling is built in an incredibly important strategical position being sited at the lowest crossing point of the River Forth with a domineering and highly defensible crag and tail hill. It is therefore not too surprising to learn that the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. During the development of the Kingdom of Scotland Stirling was one of the principal royal strongholds and was a Royal burgh until 1975. With such an impressive history you will find a wealth of fascinating first class visitor attractions within only a short distance from each other. Many of these are within walking distance for the fit and able but if your mobility is impaired you may find the area around Stirling Castle a little too steep to navigate comfortably.

Stirling has many advantages as a vacation destination. By comparison the city is generally cheaper than the nearby cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow but remains within easy reach of both. In fact the city is one of the best situated for exploring both the Lowlands and Highlands of Scotland with some of the most popular places only a short distance away which makes the city an excellent base for a touring vacation.
