Wales: Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth, WalesAberystwyth is an extremely popular vacation destination on the west coast of Ceredigion, Wales. Aberystwyth is the main administrative centre for the region, home to the National Library and has a considerable student population (over a third of the total population during term time) who attend the excellent University of Wales Aberystwyth.

Town, Postcode, Attraction

Situated between three lush green hills and benefiting from having two beaches and a marina the town is extremely popular with young and old alike. While the old enjoy the beautiful countryside and numerous historic sights, the young indulge in watersports and more lively pursuits (of which there are plenty to choose from).

One of the most beautiful aspects of Aberystwyth is it's lovely, and long, seafront. Stretching from the mouth of the harbour in the south to Constitution Hill in the north, the seafront features a wide promenade, a pier and some fine specimens of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The two beaches are separated by the wonderful ruins of Aberystwyth Castle which continue to hold their own against the ravages of the pounding Irish Sea. Another castle worth a visit while you are in Aberystwyth is the superb Cilgerran Castle in the Teifi Valley which features twin towers and a curtain wall.

With such a large number of students in the town it is little wonder that there are plenty of pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes which offer superb food at reasonable prices. Outdoor pursuits, such as walking, cycling, surfing and other watersports are incredibly popular and Aberystwyth has excellent sports facilities but the town also offers an excellent selection of indoor entertainments. Listed below are a number of things to see and do in and around Aberystwyth but this is but a small selection as there are many, many other places well worth a visit. Included in the list below is the fantastic Aberystwyth Arts Centre which has a cinema and theatres but also houses small shops, cafes and bars as well as a number of studios and practice rooms together making it rather a vibrant place to spend a couple of hours at the least.

Not included in the list below is Constitution Hill which offers some breathtaking views but is most noteable for having a camera obscura. Of special note is the town's superb railways, the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway and the Vale of Rheidol Railway and a visit to Aberystwyth would not be complete without a ride on at least one of these, though choosing which one will be incredibly difficult as they both offer unique experiences.
