Wales: Cardiff
Cardiff is the vibrant capital city of Wales. In recent years the city has witnessed a renaissance, very much stimulated by the fact that it is the seat of the National Assembly of Wales (home of the Welsh devolved governement). The whole city centre is undergoing regeneration with some of the finest sporting venues in the United Kingdom, superb night life and much more, making this a first class UK vacation destination, suitable for a massively diverse range of breaks.
Although the county of Cardiff has been inhabited since as far back as Neolithic times itwas not until the Nineteenth Century that the city really began to grow. During the Iron Age four hillforts existed in the area and the Romans built a fort close to the mouth of the River Taff (just north ot today's city centre). As was usual for the time a settlement developed around the fort but, sadly, little is known of the period from when the Romans left Britain until the arrival of the Normans.
In the 11th century William I of England built a castle keep in the grounds of the old Roman fort. It wasn't long before a town grew up around the castle which still stands today. Over the next few hundred years the town grew to become an important port but even by the time of the 1801 census the population stood at less than two thousand. At the end of the 18th century the Bute family invested heavily in the town's infrastructure constructing a canal between the town and Merthyr Tydfil (the largest town in Wales at the time) and the 2nd Marquess of Bute invested in a number of docks (the first opened in 1839). By cleverly insisting that all coal and iron exports must use the family docks the Marquess ensured a bright future for the town which began to grow rapidly. In 1905 Cardiff was granted city status and in 1955 it became the capital of Wales. Today it is difficult to find a comparable city in the whole of the United Kingdom and it makes for an absolutely superb vacation destination.
